At Ridgefield Family Eye Care, we ensure patients receive personalized care tailored to their needs and concerns. This starts by enlightening our patients about their eye health and telling them what to look for. Since February is Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, we want to help by clearing up some common misconceptions about this all-too-common eye disease.

Macular Degeneration: The Truth Behind The Myths

Macular degeneration, especially age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is often shrouded in myths that can lead to confusion and anxiety. To help our patients better understand this condition, here’s the truth behind common macular degeneration myths.

Myth 1: Macular Degeneration Only Affects the Elderly

Fact: While macular degeneration is more common in people 50 years and older, it can occur to anyone at any age. Genetics, lifestyle, and overall health can contribute to the risk. Certain types of injuries to the eye or head can also cause this condition to develop earlier in life.

Myth 2: Macular Degeneration Leads to Complete Blindness

Fact: AMD affects central vision, which is crucial for reading and driving. However, it typically does not lead to total blindness, as peripheral vision is usually unaffected. If you have vision loss related to macular degeneration, our Ridgefield eye care team can help you maintain your independence and maximize your remaining vision.

Myth 3: There are No Symptoms in the Early Stages of AMD

Fact: In the early stages of AMD, noticing symptoms is difficult, but this doesn't prevent damage to your eyes and vision. Regular eye exams are necessary to catch it early so treatment can start before significant vision loss occurs. Symptoms like blurred vision and difficulty recognizing faces may appear as AMD progresses.

Myth 4: Vitamins Can Prevent AMD

Fact: While certain vitamins and minerals may reduce the risk or slow the progression of AMD, they are not a guaranteed prevention method. A balanced diet and healthy lifestyle choices are essential. Speak to our eye doctors to learn about lifestyle and dietary recommendations to prevent AMD.

Myth 5: Eye Injections are the Only Treatment for Macular Degeneration

Fact: Treatment varies based on the type and severity of AMD. Our eye care team will evaluate your case and recommend the best treatment.
